Testosterone Free & Total Testing in California

Testosterone Free & Total Testing measures the amount of testosterone in your blood. Total testosterone includes both bound and free hormone, while free testosterone measures the unbound, active portion. It is often ordered to evaluate symptoms like low sex drive, fatigue, or infertility.

What it measures

Total Testosterone — The overall amount of testosterone in your blood, including that attached to proteins.
Free Testosterone — The small fraction of testosterone that is not attached to proteins and is available for your body to use.
Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) — A protein that binds testosterone; sometimes measured to help calculate free testosterone.
Albumin — Another protein that binds testosterone; may be used in some free testosterone calculations.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by a doctor for men with symptoms of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, or fatigue. It may also be used for women with signs of excess testosterone, like acne or irregular periods.

Preparation

Fasting is not usually required, but testosterone levels are highest in the morning. Your doctor may ask you to have your blood drawn before 10 a.m. for the most accurate results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as numbers for total and free testosterone, often with a reference range. Your clinician will interpret these values along with your symptoms and medical history. This information is not medical advice; only a healthcare provider can diagnose or treat any condition.
