The Timothy grass (hay) allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to Timothy grass pollen, a common cause of seasonal hay fever. It is usually ordered when you have ongoing sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, or asthma-like symptoms that may be tied to grass pollen seasons.

What it measures

  • Timothy grass specific IgE — The main marker; measures allergy antibody directed at Timothy grass pollen.
  • Total IgE — A general allergy antibody level that can help give context to the specific result.
  • Other grass or pollen specific IgE — Sometimes checked alongside to see whether other pollens also trigger symptoms.
  • Common aeroallergen panel — May include dust mites, molds, or animal dander to help narrow down triggers.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician, allergist, or immunologist typically orders this test. It is often used when symptoms follow a seasonal pattern or when skin testing is not practical.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell your clinician about antihistamines or other medications you take, because some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high, along with a reference range from the lab. A clinician interprets the number together with your symptoms and history; a positive result alone does not confirm an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.
