A sheep allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to proteins found in sheep dander, wool, and sometimes sheep milk. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing allergy symptoms and a clinician wants to see whether sheep is a likely trigger.

What it measures

  • Sheep dander-specific IgE — Antibodies that rise when the immune system reacts to sheep skin and wool proteins.
  • Sheep wool-specific IgE — Antibodies linked to reactions to wool fibers and the dust they carry.
  • Sheep milk-specific IgE — Antibodies that may be checked if milk or dairy exposure is a concern.
  • Total IgE — A general antibody level that can help put the specific results in context.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician, allergist, or immunologist typically orders this test. It may be requested for people with asthma, eczema, or hay fever symptoms that appear or worsen around sheep or wool.

Preparation

No fasting is needed. Tell the clinician about any antihistamines or other medicines you take, because some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level for each marker, often with a reference range from the lab. A clinician interprets these numbers alongside your symptoms and history, since a positive result alone does not always mean you have an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to sheep?

Not necessarily. It shows your immune system has made antibodies to sheep proteins, but only a clinician can decide whether that matches a true allergy.

Do I need to avoid wool if my test is positive?

Many people tolerate wool clothing even with a positive test. Discuss any changes with your clinician rather than avoiding wool on your own.

Can this test be done while I take allergy medicine?

Some antihistamines can affect allergy testing. Ask your clinician whether you should stop any medicine before the blood draw.

How long until I get results?

Results usually come back in about 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.
