Selenium Urine Test in Puerto Rico

The Selenium Urine Test measures the amount of selenium excreted in your urine. Selenium is a trace mineral obtained from foods like Brazil nuts, seafood, and grains. This test is ordered to assess selenium status and help identify a deficiency or excessive intake.

What it measures

Selenium — The primary mineral measured; reflects recent dietary intake and body stores.
Creatinine — Often measured at the same time to adjust selenium levels for urine concentration.
Urine Volume — Total volume collected over a set period, used to calculate total selenium excretion.
Specific Gravity — Indicates how dilute or concentrated the urine is, which can affect selenium results.

Who it is for

A clinician may order this test if you have symptoms of selenium deficiency or toxicity, or if you have a condition that affects nutrient absorption. It is also used to monitor selenium levels in people receiving nutritional support.

Preparation

No fasting is required. You may be asked to collect a 24-hour urine sample, so follow the instructions provided by your lab carefully.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as the amount of selenium in your urine, often as micrograms per liter or micrograms per 24 hours. Your clinician will interpret the results alongside your diet, symptoms, and other tests. This is general information, not medical advice; only a qualified healthcare provider can diagnose or treat any condition.
