Parrot & Parakeet Feathers Allergy Test in Puerto Rico

The Parrot & Parakeet Feathers Allergy Test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to proteins found in parrot and parakeet feathers and dander. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing allergy symptoms and a bird in the home or workplace, or when other causes have been ruled out.

What it measures

Parrot feather-specific IgE — Antibody level linked to parrot feathers and dander.
Parakeet feather-specific IgE — Antibody level linked to parakeet feathers and dander.
Total IgE — Overall allergy antibody level, used for context.
Other bird or environmental allergens — Sometimes included to compare likely triggers.

Who it is for

A clinician such as a primary care provider or allergist typically orders this test. It may be requested for people with sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or itchy eyes around pet birds.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell your clinician about any medications you take, since some drugs can affect allergy test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as antibody levels, often with a reference range or class score. A clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms and history, because a positive result alone does not always mean you have an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to avoid my bird before the test?

Usually no. The test measures antibodies in your blood, so brief avoidance is not required unless your clinician says otherwise.

Can the test tell me if my bird is the cause of my symptoms?

It can show sensitivity to bird proteins, but your clinician must combine it with your symptom pattern to judge whether the bird is the likely trigger.

How long until I get results?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days, though it can vary by lab.

Is this test painful?

It uses a standard blood draw, which feels like a brief pinch. No needles stay in place.
