The Green Nimitti Midge Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for an allergic sensitization to the green nimitti midge, a small flying insect. It is usually ordered when a person has unexplained allergy symptoms and a clinician wants to see whether this specific insect may be involved.

What it measures

  • Total IgE — A general measure of the amount of allergy-related antibody in the blood.
  • Specific IgE to green nimitti midge — Shows whether your immune system makes antibodies that react to this midge.
  • Specific IgE to related midge or insect allergens — Helps show whether your reaction is specific to this midge or may overlap with similar insects.
  • Eosinophil count (if included) — A type of white blood cell that can rise with allergic conditions.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by an allergist, immunologist, or primary care clinician for people with ongoing sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, nasal congestion, or asthma-like symptoms around midge exposure.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is usually required. Tell your clinician about any allergy or asthma medicines you take, because some may affect interpretation.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level or class for specific IgE, often alongside a total IgE value. Your clinician interprets these numbers together with your symptoms and history; a positive result alone does not confirm an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test hurt?

It uses a standard blood draw from a vein, which feels like a brief pinch.

How long until I get results?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days, though it can vary by lab.

Can I take my allergy medicine before the test?

Ask your clinician. Some medicines may need to be paused, but do not stop any medicine without checking first.

What if my result is positive?

A positive result means sensitization, not necessarily an active allergy. Your clinician will review it with your symptoms to decide what it means for you.
