What it measures

  • Urine fluoride concentration — The amount of fluoride in a urine sample, usually reported in milligrams per liter (mg/L).
  • Creatinine (sometimes) — A substance that helps adjust fluoride levels for how concentrated your urine is.
  • Collection volume (sometimes) — The total amount of urine collected over a set time, if a 24-hour sample is used.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by a doctor or dentist when someone has been exposed to high levels of fluoride or has symptoms that could be related to fluoride. It may also be used in workplace or environmental health evaluations.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually needed. Your doctor may ask you to avoid fluoride-containing products, such as toothpaste or mouthwash, for a short time before the test. Follow any specific instructions you are given.
