An electrolyte panel is a blood test that measures the levels of key minerals and salts in your body. These electrolytes help control nerve and muscle function, fluid balance, and blood acidity. It is often ordered as part of a routine checkup or when you have symptoms like weakness, confusion, or irregular heartbeat.

What it measures

  • Sodium — Helps balance fluids and supports nerve and muscle function.
  • Potassium — Important for heart rhythm and muscle contractions.
  • Chloride — Works with sodium to maintain fluid balance and blood acidity.
  • Bicarbonate (CO2) — Helps keep your blood at the right pH level.
  • Calcium — Needed for muscle, nerve, and heart function, and for bone health.

Who it is for

A healthcare provider may order this test during a routine physical, before surgery, or if you take medications that affect electrolyte levels. It is also used to monitor conditions like kidney disease, heart failure, or dehydration.

Preparation

Usually no special preparation is needed. In some cases, your provider may ask you to fast for 8–12 hours before the blood draw, especially if other tests are done at the same time.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as numbers with a reference range for each electrolyte. Your clinician will interpret them alongside your symptoms, medications, and other tests. This is general information only and not medical advice; always discuss your results with a qualified healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for an electrolyte panel?

Not usually. However, if your provider orders other tests like glucose or cholesterol, you may need to fast. Follow your provider's instructions.

What can cause abnormal electrolyte levels?

Many things, including dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney problems, certain medications, and some chronic conditions. Your clinician will help find the cause.

How long does it take to get results?

Typically 1–3 business days, but this can vary by lab and how urgently the test is needed.

Is this test the same as a basic metabolic panel?

A basic metabolic panel includes electrolytes plus other tests like glucose and kidney function markers. An electrolyte panel focuses only on electrolytes.
