Cobalt lab testing measures the amount of cobalt in your blood. It is usually ordered when someone has a cobalt-containing medical implant, such as a metal-on-metal hip replacement, or when exposure to cobalt in the workplace is suspected. The test helps assess recent cobalt exposure.

What it measures

  • Cobalt (blood) — The amount of cobalt in your blood at the time of the draw.
  • Cobalt (serum or plasma) — Cobalt measured in the liquid part of blood; both serum and plasma are common.
  • Whole-blood cobalt — Cobalt measured in whole blood, which may better reflect longer-term exposure.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by an orthopedic surgeon, occupational medicine physician, or primary care clinician when a patient has a cobalt-containing implant or known workplace exposure.

Preparation

No fasting is required for cobalt blood testing. Tell your clinician about any cobalt-containing supplements, vitamins, or recent imaging contrast dyes, as these may affect results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a number, usually in micrograms per liter (mcg/L), along with the laboratory's reference range. Your clinician interprets the result in the context of your symptoms, implant history, and other tests. This information is general and not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified healthcare professional.
