The Russian Thistle Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for an allergic response to Russian thistle, a common weed also known as tumbleweed. It is ordered when a person has allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes that may be linked to this plant.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to Russian thistle — Measures the amount of allergy-related antibody your immune system makes against Russian thistle pollen.
  • Total IgE — Sometimes measured to give a general sense of allergic tendency, though it is not specific to Russian thistle.
  • Other weed pollens (optional panel) — May include similar weeds like pigweed or sagebrush to see if symptoms are from more than one source.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or allergist typically orders this test for someone with seasonal or year-round allergy symptoms that worsen around Russian thistle exposure.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. The blood sample can be drawn at any time of day.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a numerical level or a class (for example, negative, low, moderate, or high) for Russian thistle-specific IgE. A clinician interprets these results along with your symptoms and history; a positive test alone does not confirm an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Requesting the Russian Thistle Allergy Test in Oregon

Order online, choose a certified collection site in Oregon, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. Access across Pacific is uneven, so confirming a site ahead of time is worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to avoid my allergy medications before this test?

No. This blood test is not affected by antihistamines or most other allergy medications. Ask your clinician if you have specific concerns.

What does a positive result mean?

It means your immune system has made antibodies to Russian thistle. Your clinician will consider whether that matches your symptoms.

Can this test tell me if I will have a severe reaction?

No. It only shows sensitization, not how severe your symptoms might be. Talk with your clinician about your risk.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are usually available within 1 to 3 business days.
