The Guinea Pig Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for an allergic sensitization to guinea pig proteins. It is usually ordered when someone has symptoms such as sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, or hives after handling guinea pigs or being in a home where they live.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to guinea pig epithelium — Antibody level against proteins found in guinea pig skin and fur.
  • Specific IgE to guinea pig serum proteins — Antibody level against proteins in guinea pig blood or urine.
  • Specific IgE to guinea pig dander — Antibody level against shed skin flakes and hair.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody in the blood, sometimes included for context.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or allergist typically orders this test. It may also be requested by a workplace health provider if job-related exposure to guinea pigs is suspected.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell the clinician about any antihistamines or other medicines you take, because some can affect allergy test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level for each allergen, often as a number or class that indicates whether sensitization is likely. A clinician interprets these results alongside your symptoms and history. This is general information only and is not medical advice.

Requesting the Guinea Pig Allergy Test in Oregon

Order online, choose a certified collection site in Oregon, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. With coastal metros, inland towns, and rural counties with very different access to testing, it pays to schedule your collection in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to stop my allergy medicine before this test?

Some antihistamines can affect allergy testing. Ask your clinician whether you should pause any medicine and for how long.

Can this test tell me if I will have a reaction around guinea pigs?

It shows whether your immune system is sensitized to guinea pig proteins. Only a clinician can interpret what that means for your symptoms.

Is a blood test better than a skin test?

Both can check for allergy. A blood test may be used when skin testing is not suitable for you.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are usually available in 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by laboratory.
