A chromium urine test measures how much chromium is in your urine. It is usually ordered to check for exposure to chromium on the job or to see whether chromium levels are higher than expected. Chromium is a metal found in some workplaces and in small amounts in food.

What it measures

  • Chromium (total) — The main metal measured in the urine sample.
  • Creatinine — A substance used to adjust for how dilute your urine is.
  • Collection volume — The amount of urine collected, which helps with calculations.
  • Collection time — When the sample was collected, which helps interpret the result.

Who it is for

A doctor or employer health program may order this test after known or suspected exposure to chromium, or when symptoms suggest metal exposure. It is not a routine screening test for most people.

Preparation

Usually no fasting is needed. Your clinician may ask you to avoid certain foods, supplements, or work exposure for a period before the sample, and may request a timed or 24-hour urine collection.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a chromium level, often adjusted for creatinine, along with the collection details. Your clinician compares the result with the testing lab's reference range and your exposure history. This is general information only and is not medical advice; only a qualified clinician can interpret your results and decide what they mean for you.
