A cat dander allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to proteins found in cat skin flakes, saliva, and urine. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing allergy symptoms and the cause is unclear, or to help confirm a suspected cat allergy.

What it measures

  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergy-related antibody in your blood.
  • Cat dander-specific IgE — Antibody aimed at cat proteins such as Fel d 1.
  • Cat serum albumin-specific IgE — Antibody aimed at a different cat protein; can matter for some people.
  • Other allergen-specific IgE — Sometimes checked alongside cat dander to compare triggers.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician, allergist, or immunologist typically orders this test. It may also be requested before allergy shots or when symptoms persist despite avoiding cats.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell your clinician about antihistamines or other medicines you take, since some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of cat-specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high. A clinician interprets the number alongside your symptoms and history; a positive result alone does not always mean you have symptoms. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to cats?

It means your immune system makes antibodies to cat proteins. Whether you have actual symptoms depends on your history, so your clinician interprets the result with you.

Can I take allergy medicine before the test?

Some antihistamines can affect allergy testing. Ask your clinician whether to pause them and for how long.

Is this test painful?

It uses a standard blood draw, so you may feel a brief pinch when the needle goes in.

How soon will I get results?

Most results are ready in about 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.
