A heavy metal lab test measures the amount of certain metals in your blood. It is ordered when a person has symptoms or a known exposure to metals that can be harmful at high levels.

What it measures

  • Lead — A metal that can affect the brain and nerves, often from old paint or plumbing.
  • Mercury — A metal found in some fish and industrial settings that can harm the nervous system.
  • Arsenic — A metal-like element that can cause stomach and skin problems with long-term exposure.
  • Cadmium — A metal linked to kidney and lung damage, often from smoking or certain workplaces.
  • Chromium — A metal that can cause skin and breathing issues in some industrial workers.

Who it is for

A doctor may order this test if you have symptoms like confusion, numbness, or stomach pain, or if you work with metals or have other exposure risks.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually needed. Tell your doctor about any fish, seafood, or metal-containing products you have recently eaten or used.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as the amount of each metal in your blood, often in micrograms per deciliter. A clinician interprets them based on your symptoms, exposure history, and other tests. This is general information, not medical advice; only your healthcare provider can explain what your results mean.
