The Parrot & Parakeet Droppings Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for allergic sensitivity to proteins found in the droppings of parrots and parakeets. It is typically ordered when a person who keeps or works around these birds has symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or itchy eyes, and the cause is unclear.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to parrot droppings — Measures the level of allergic antibody (IgE) directed against parrot dropping proteins.
  • Specific IgE to parakeet droppings — Measures the level of allergic antibody (IgE) directed against parakeet dropping proteins.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody in the blood, which can help provide context.
  • Other bird-related allergens (optional) — Sometimes included to check for sensitivity to feathers, serum, or other bird proteins.

Who it is for

This test is usually ordered by an allergist, immunologist, or primary care clinician for people who have bird-related symptoms and may be exposed to parrots or parakeets at home or at work.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is required. The blood sample can be collected at any time of day.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a numerical level of specific IgE for each allergen, often with a reference range or class (e.g., negative, low, moderate, high). A clinician interprets these results alongside your symptoms and history. This information is not medical advice; only a qualified healthcare professional can diagnose an allergy.

How long does it take to get results?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days after the blood sample is collected.

Is this test covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by insurance plan and medical necessity. Check with your insurance provider before testing.
