The Sweet Vernal Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for an allergic response to sweet vernal grass pollen, a common cause of seasonal hay fever. It is usually ordered when symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes happen during grass pollen season.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to sweet vernal grass — The main marker; shows whether your immune system makes antibodies to this pollen.
  • Total IgE — Sometimes measured to give a general sense of allergic activity.
  • Other grass pollens — May be checked together to see if related grasses also trigger symptoms.
  • Cross-reactive markers — Can help explain reactions to similar pollens or some foods.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or allergist typically orders this test when a person has seasonal allergy symptoms and the cause is unclear. It may also be used to help guide avoidance planning.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell your clinician about antihistamines or other medicines you take, since some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are usually reported as a number or class level for each marker, often within 1-3 business days. A clinician interprets the result alongside your symptoms and history; a positive test alone does not always mean you have an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Requesting the Sweet Vernal Allergy Test in California

Order online, choose a certified collection site in California, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. Access across Pacific is uneven, so confirming a site ahead of time is worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test hurt?

It uses a standard blood draw, so you may feel a brief pinch. Serious problems are uncommon.

Do I need to stop my allergy medicine?

Ask your clinician. Some medicines can affect results, but do not stop any prescription without checking first.

Can a positive result mean I am allergic?

Not always. A clinician compares the result with your symptoms to decide what it means for you.

How soon will I get results?

Most results are ready in 1-3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.
