Sheep Sorrel Allergy Test in California

The Sheep Sorrel Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for an allergic response to sheep sorrel, a common weed and ingredient in some herbal products. It is ordered when a person has symptoms such as hives, nasal congestion, or breathing trouble after exposure to sheep sorrel or related plants.

What it measures

Sheep sorrel-specific IgE — The main marker; IgE is an antibody linked to allergic reactions.
Total IgE — A general measure of allergic tendency, not specific to sheep sorrel.
Other weed pollens — May be checked together to see if symptoms are due to similar plants.

Who it is for

This test is usually ordered by an allergist or primary care clinician for people with a history of allergic symptoms after contact with sheep sorrel or other weeds. It may also be used when a person reacts to herbal supplements containing sheep sorrel.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell your clinician about any medications you take, as some antihistamines may affect test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a number or class level for sheep sorrel-specific IgE, often alongside a reference range. A higher level suggests sensitivity, but only a clinician can interpret it with your symptoms and history. This is general information, not medical advice.
