The pigeon droppings allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to proteins found in pigeon droppings, feathers, and serum. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing allergy or asthma-like symptoms and may be exposed to pigeons or their droppings at home, work, or a public space.

What it measures

  • Pigeon droppings IgE — Antibody level tied to droppings and dust from dried waste.
  • Pigeon feathers IgE — Antibody level tied to feather proteins.
  • Pigeon serum IgE — Antibody level tied to proteins in pigeon blood and tissue.
  • Total IgE — Overall allergy antibody level, used only as context.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or allergist typically orders this test after taking a history of symptoms and possible bird exposure. It may also be used to help evaluate certain lung or breathing conditions linked to bird contact.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is required. Tell the clinician about any allergy or asthma medicines you take, since some can affect results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as antibody levels, often with a reference range or class score. A clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms and exposure history, because a positive result alone does not confirm a diagnosis. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to pigeons?

It means your immune system has made antibodies to pigeon proteins. Whether that causes symptoms depends on your history, so a clinician reviews the result with you.

Can I take this test if I keep pigeons?

Yes. The test can be done whether or not you keep birds, but tell the clinician about your level of contact.

Is the test painful?

It uses a standard blood draw from a vein, which feels like a brief pinch.

How long until I get results?

Most results are ready in about 1 to 3 business days.
