A nickel, urine test measures the amount of nickel in your urine. It is ordered to check for exposure to nickel, which can occur in certain workplaces or from metal implants. The test helps a doctor see if you have taken in more nickel than usual.

What it measures

  • Nickel concentration — The amount of nickel in a urine sample, usually reported in micrograms per liter (µg/L).
  • Creatinine — A substance that helps adjust the nickel result for how diluted your urine is.
  • Collection duration — Whether the sample is a single spot urine or a 24-hour collection, which affects how results are interpreted.

Who it is for

Doctors may order this test for people with known or suspected nickel exposure, such as metal workers, welders, or those with nickel-containing implants. It is also used when symptoms suggest possible nickel toxicity.

Preparation

No fasting is usually required. Your doctor may ask you to avoid nickel-rich foods or certain supplements before the test, and to collect a clean-catch urine sample.
