An online liver function test (LFT) is a blood test that checks how well your liver is working and looks for signs of liver irritation or damage. It is often ordered during a routine checkup, when you have symptoms like fatigue or jaundice, or to monitor the effects of certain medicines.

What it measures

  • ALT — An enzyme mostly found in the liver; higher levels can suggest liver cell injury.
  • AST — An enzyme in the liver and other tissues; higher levels can indicate liver or muscle stress.
  • ALP — An enzyme linked to the bile ducts; higher levels may point to a blockage or bone issue.
  • Bilirubin — A yellow pigment made when old red blood cells break down; high levels can cause jaundice.
  • Albumin — A protein made by the liver; low levels can reflect poor liver function or other conditions.
  • Total protein — Measures overall proteins in the blood, including those made by the liver.

Who it is for

A doctor or other licensed clinician typically orders an LFT when evaluating liver health, checking for side effects of medicines, or monitoring a known liver condition.

Preparation

Fasting is often not required for a basic LFT, but some labs may ask you to fast for 8–12 hours if other tests are included. Follow the specific instructions provided with your order.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as numbers with a reference range for each marker. A clinician interprets these values alongside your symptoms, history, and other tests; this information is not medical advice.
