A horse dander allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system has made antibodies against proteins found in horse hair, skin flakes, and sweat. It is usually ordered when someone has allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, hives, or wheezing after being around horses or riding gear.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to horse dander — The main marker; it shows whether your blood contains antibodies that react to horse proteins.
  • Total IgE — A general allergy antibody level that can help your clinician see the overall picture.
  • Other allergen-specific IgE — Sometimes tested alongside horse dander to check for reactions to dust, mold, or other animals.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or an allergist typically orders this test when a person reports symptoms around horses or when other allergy causes need to be ruled out.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell your clinician about any antihistamines or other medicines you take, because some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high. A clinician interprets the number together with your symptoms and history; a positive result alone does not always mean you have an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Requesting the Horse Dander Allergy Test in California

Order online, choose a certified collection site in California, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. With coastal metros, inland towns, and rural counties with very different access to testing, it pays to schedule your collection in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to avoid horses before the test?

No. The blood test measures antibodies already present, so you do not need to change your contact with horses beforehand.

Can this test tell me if I will have a reaction?

It shows sensitization, meaning your immune system has responded to horse proteins. Whether you actually get symptoms depends on your history and exposure.

How long until I get results?

Most results are ready in 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.

Is this test painful?

It is a standard blood draw, usually from a vein in your arm. You may feel a brief pinch.
