White-Faced Hornet Allergy Test in California

The white-faced hornet allergy test is a blood test that looks for antibodies your immune system may make against white-faced hornet venom. It is usually ordered after a sting reaction or when a doctor wants to check whether you are sensitized to this insect.

What it measures

White-faced hornet venom-specific IgE — An antibody tied to allergic reactions to this insect's venom.
Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels; it does not diagnose a specific allergy.
Other venom-specific IgE — Tests for yellow jacket, yellow hornet, wasp, or honeybee may be added to compare reactions.
Serum tryptase (sometimes) — A blood protein that can help evaluate severe sting reactions.

Who it is for

A doctor or allergist typically orders this test after a sting causes hives, swelling away from the sting, breathing trouble, or dizziness. It may also be used when the insect involved is uncertain.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell your clinician about medicines you take, especially antihistamines, since some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of venom-specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high. A clinician interprets the number alongside your symptoms and history, because a positive result alone does not always mean you will react. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
