A goat allergy test checks your blood for antibodies that may indicate an allergy to goat proteins, such as those in goat milk, cheese, or meat. It is usually ordered when someone has allergic symptoms after contact with or eating goat products, or when a doctor wants to rule out goat allergy as a cause of ongoing symptoms.

What it measures

  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergy-related antibodies in your blood.
  • Goat milk-specific IgE — Antibodies that target proteins in goat milk.
  • Goat cheese-specific IgE — Antibodies that target proteins in goat cheese.
  • Goat meat-specific IgE — Antibodies that target proteins in goat meat.
  • Cross-reactive allergens (e.g., cow milk, sheep milk) — Similar proteins from other animals that may also trigger a reaction.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by an allergist, primary care doctor, or pediatrician when a patient reports symptoms after exposure to goat products. It may also be used to help distinguish a goat allergy from other food allergies or intolerances.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed for this blood test. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as levels of specific IgE antibodies, often on a scale from low to high. Your clinician will interpret these numbers along with your symptoms and medical history to determine if a goat allergy is likely. This information is not medical advice; only a healthcare professional can diagnose an allergy.
