Finch Feathers Allergy Test in California

The Finch Feathers Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for allergic sensitization to proteins found in the feathers and droppings of finches. It is ordered when a person has symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, or asthma-like breathing problems after contact with finches or their cages.

What it measures

Finch feather-specific IgE — Antibodies that react to proteins in finch feathers; higher levels suggest sensitization.
Finch dropping-specific IgE — Antibodies that react to proteins in finch droppings, which can become airborne in dust.
Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels; helps interpret the specific results.
Serum protein electrophoresis — Sometimes ordered to rule out other causes of high total IgE, such as a rare blood condition.

Who it is for

Allergists, immunologists, or primary care clinicians order this test for people who keep finches, work with birds, or have unexplained allergy or asthma symptoms around finches.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell your clinician about any medications you take, especially antihistamines, as they may affect other allergy tests but not this blood test.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a number for each specific IgE, often with a reference range or class score. A clinician interprets these numbers along with your symptoms and history; a positive result alone does not confirm an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to avoid my finches before the test?

No. The test measures antibodies in your blood, so you do not need to change your contact with finches beforehand.

Can this test tell me if I am actually allergic to finches?

It shows sensitization, but only a clinician can diagnose an allergy by combining results with your symptoms and exposure history.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are typically available in 1 to 3 business days after the blood sample is collected.

Is this test covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan. Check with your insurance provider about benefits for allergy blood testing.
