An eggplant allergy test is a blood test that looks for antibodies your immune system may make against eggplant proteins. It is usually ordered when a person has had symptoms such as itching, hives, or stomach upset after eating eggplant or foods containing it.

What it measures

  • Eggplant-specific IgE — The main marker; IgE is an immune protein linked to allergic reactions.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels, sometimes included for context.
  • Related food-specific IgE — May check other foods in the same plant family, such as tomato or potato, if your clinician requests it.

Who it is for

A doctor or allergist typically orders this test after a suspected reaction to eggplant or when evaluating food allergies. It is not a routine screening test.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is usually required. Tell your clinician about all medicines you take, since some drugs can affect immune test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high. A positive result does not by itself prove an allergy, and a negative result does not always rule one out; a clinician interprets the numbers alongside your symptoms and history. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to avoid eggplant before the test?

No. The test measures antibodies in your blood and does not require you to eat or avoid eggplant beforehand.

How long do results take?

Results are typically available within 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.

Can this test tell me if I am truly allergic?

It shows whether your immune system has made antibodies to eggplant, but only a clinician can determine whether that means a true allergy.

Is the blood draw painful?

A blood draw feels like a brief pinch. Most people return to normal activities right away.
