The German roach allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to proteins from German cockroaches, a common indoor pest. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing allergy or asthma symptoms and a clinician wants to see whether cockroach exposure may be contributing.

What it measures

  • Specific IgE to German cockroach — The main marker; it measures antibody linked to cockroach allergy.
  • Total IgE — A general allergy antibody level, sometimes included for context.
  • Other allergen-specific IgE — Tests for nearby allergens such as dust mites may be added to compare causes.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician, allergist, or pulmonologist typically orders this test, often for people with persistent nasal, eye, or breathing symptoms, especially in urban or older housing.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell your clinician about antihistamines or other medicines you take, since some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level or class for each allergen, and a clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms and history. A positive result shows sensitivity, not necessarily that cockroaches cause your symptoms. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified clinician.

It means your blood shows sensitivity to cockroach proteins. Whether that causes symptoms depends on your exposure and your clinician's assessment.

Do I need to fast?

No. This test does not require fasting.

Can I take my allergy medicine before the test?

Ask your clinician. Some medicines may need to be paused, but do not stop any medicine without checking first.

How long do results take?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days, though it can vary by lab.
