A cat and dog allergy test is a blood test that checks for allergic antibodies (IgE) directed at proteins found in cat and dog dander, saliva, and urine. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing or seasonal allergy symptoms and a clinician wants to confirm whether cats or dogs are contributing.

What it measures

  • Total IgE — Overall level of allergy-related antibody in the blood; gives context but does not identify a specific trigger.
  • Cat dander-specific IgE — Antibody directed at cat allergens such as Fel d 1, the main cat protein.
  • Dog dander-specific IgE — Antibody directed at dog allergens; dog proteins vary more between breeds.
  • Cat or dog albumin-specific IgE — Antibody to a blood protein in these animals; can matter for some reactions.
  • Other common allergens — Sometimes tested together, such as dust mite or pollen, to compare triggers.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or an allergist typically orders this test. It may be requested when symptoms suggest an animal trigger, or when skin testing is not practical.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell the lab about antihistamines or other allergy medicines, since some can affect results; timing is otherwise not restricted.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level for each allergen, often with a reference range or class. A clinician interprets them alongside your history, because a positive result does not always mean symptoms. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified clinician.

Requesting the Cat & Dog Allergy Test in California

Order online, choose a certified collection site in California, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. Access across Pacific is uneven, so confirming a site ahead of time is worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to my pet?

Not necessarily. The test shows antibody levels, and a clinician must combine this with your symptoms and exposure history.

Can I keep my pet if the test is positive?

Many people manage symptoms with a clinician's guidance. Treatment and home changes are decisions for you and your clinician.

Do I need to fast?

No. Fasting is not required for this test.

How long do results take?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days, though it can vary by lab.
