An avocado allergy test is a blood test that checks for antibodies your immune system may make against avocado proteins. It is usually ordered when a person has had symptoms such as itching, hives, or stomach upset after eating avocado or foods containing it.

What it measures

  • Avocado-specific IgE — The main marker; IgE is an antibody linked to allergic reactions.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels, sometimes included for context.
  • Other food-specific IgE — Tests for related foods may be added if your history suggests other triggers.
  • Component allergens — Specific avocado proteins may be checked to better describe your pattern.

Who it is for

A doctor or allergist typically orders this test after a history of possible reactions to avocado. It may also be used when other tests or food challenges are being considered.

Preparation

No fasting is needed. Tell the lab about medicines you take, especially antihistamines, because they can affect some allergy tests.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as antibody levels, often with a reference range or class. A clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms and history, since a positive result alone does not always mean a true allergy. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified clinician.

Requesting the Avocado Allergy Test in California

Order online, choose a certified collection site in California, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. Access across Pacific is uneven, so confirming a site ahead of time is worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to stop eating avocado before the test?

No. The blood test does not require you to avoid avocado beforehand, but follow any instructions from your clinician.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are usually available in 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.

Can this test tell me if I am truly allergic?

It shows whether you have avocado-specific antibodies, but a clinician must interpret it with your symptoms to judge whether a true allergy is likely.

Is this test painful?

It uses a standard blood draw, so you may feel a brief pinch when the needle goes in.
