What it measures

  • Color and clarity — Shows how concentrated or clear the urine is, which can reflect hydration and other factors.
  • pH — Measures how acidic or alkaline the urine is.
  • Protein — Detects protein that may leak from the kidneys.
  • Glucose — Checks for sugar that may appear when blood sugar is high.
  • Ketones — Byproducts of fat breakdown that can show up when the body uses fat for energy.
  • Blood cells — Looks for red or white blood cells that may indicate irritation or infection.

Who it is for

A routine urinalysis is typically ordered by a primary care clinician, often during an annual physical or when you have urinary symptoms.

Preparation

No fasting is required. A clean-catch urine sample is usually collected at the lab or clinic; follow any specific instructions you are given.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as values or as negative, trace, small, moderate, or large for each item. Your clinician interprets these results along with your health history and other tests. This is general information, not medical advice.
