The mercury, urine test measures the amount of mercury excreted in urine, primarily reflecting recent exposure to certain forms of mercury. It is often ordered when someone has symptoms or a history of possible mercury exposure from sources like certain fish, industrial settings, or dental work.

What it measures

  • Urine mercury concentration — The level of mercury in a urine sample, usually reported in micrograms per liter (µg/L).
  • 24-hour urine mercury — If collected over 24 hours, the total mercury excreted in a day, which may give a better picture of exposure.
  • Creatinine (sometimes) — A substance used to adjust mercury levels for urine concentration, helping account for how dilute the sample is.

Who it is for

A doctor may order this test if you have symptoms like tremors, memory problems, or numbness that could be linked to mercury, or if you work in a job with known mercury exposure.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually needed. You may be asked to avoid certain seafood for a day or two before the test, depending on your doctor's instructions.

Results and what they mean
