A chlamydia urine test checks a urine sample for the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, which causes one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. It is ordered to screen for infection in people without symptoms or to confirm infection when symptoms such as burning during urination or discharge are present.

What it measures

  • Chlamydia trachomatis DNA — Genetic material from the bacterium, detected by a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT).
  • Chlamydia trachomatis RNA — A related target some NAAT tests use to detect the same organism.
  • Collection adequacy — Whether the urine sample is suitable for testing, since a poor sample can affect accuracy.

Who it is for

A clinician typically orders this test for sexually active adults and teens, especially those with new or multiple partners, symptoms, or possible exposure. It is also part of routine screening recommended for some groups, such as pregnant people and young women.

Preparation

No fasting is needed. For the most reliable result, collect the first part of the urine stream (first-catch) and avoid urinating for about one to two hours before the sample, unless your clinician says otherwise.

Results and what they mean

Results are usually reported as positive (detected) or negative (not detected), sometimes with a note if the sample was inadequate. A positive result means the bacterium was found; a negative result means it was not found, though very recent exposure may not show up yet. Only a clinician can interpret your result in context. This is general information, not medical advice.

Because the region is far-flung, long gaps between communities that reward planning a lab visit ahead of time — worth planning around when you book.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test check for other infections too?

A chlamydia urine test alone does not. Your clinician may order tests for gonorrhea or other infections at the same time.

Can I test at home?

Some home collection kits are available, but a clinician visit allows proper testing and follow-up. Ask your clinician what is best for you.

How soon after exposure should I test?

Testing too soon may miss an infection. Ask your clinician when to test based on your situation.

Is my result private?

Yes. Results are handled confidentially and shared with you and your clinician.
