This test checks a urine sample for two common sexually transmitted infections (STIs): chlamydia and gonorrhea. It is ordered when someone has symptoms, has been exposed to an STI, or wants routine screening. Results guide a clinician in deciding whether further care is needed.

What it measures

  • Chlamydia trachomatis — The bacterium that causes chlamydia; detected by its genetic material.
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae — The bacterium that causes gonorrhea; detected by its genetic material.
  • Nucleic acid amplification (NAAT) — The lab method that finds small amounts of bacterial DNA or RNA in urine.

Who it is for

A clinician, clinic, or sexual health service typically orders this test. It may be requested for anyone with symptoms, a known exposure, or as part of routine screening.

Preparation

No fasting is required. You may be asked to collect a first-catch urine sample, meaning the first part of your urine stream, or to avoid urinating for a period before the sample. Follow the collection instructions given by the lab or clinic.

Results and what they mean

Results are usually reported as detected or not detected for each bacterium, sometimes with a negative or positive label. A clinician interprets these results along with symptoms, exposure history, and other tests. This information is general and is not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified clinician.
