A beta-hCG pregnancy test measures the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone produced during pregnancy, in your blood. It is ordered to confirm pregnancy, monitor its early progress, or help evaluate certain cancers and fertility treatments.

What it measures

  • Total beta-hCG — The overall amount of hCG hormone in your blood.
  • Free beta-hCG — The unbound portion of hCG, sometimes measured separately.
  • Beta-hCG doubling time — How quickly your hCG level rises over 48 hours, which can indicate pregnancy health.

Who it is for

A healthcare provider typically orders this test if you have a positive urine pregnancy test, symptoms of pregnancy, or are undergoing fertility treatment. It may also be used to monitor certain tumors.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is required. Tell your provider about any medications or supplements you take, as some can affect hCG levels.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a numeric value in milli-international units per milliliter (mIU/mL), often with a reference range. Your clinician interprets the number based on your medical history and may repeat the test to see how levels change. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified healthcare professional.
