Thyroid Tests in Alaska — Request Locally

Thyroid tests are blood tests that check how well your thyroid gland is working. The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that helps control energy use, heart rate, and body temperature. These tests are often ordered when you have symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, or a fast or slow heartbeat.

What it measures

TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) — A signal from the brain that tells the thyroid to work harder or slow down.
Free T4 (thyroxine) — The main thyroid hormone available for your body to use.
Free T3 (triiodothyronine) — The active form of thyroid hormone that affects cells.
Thyroid antibodies — Proteins that may suggest the immune system is affecting the thyroid.

Who it is for

A doctor or other clinician usually orders thyroid tests based on your symptoms, a physical exam, or another abnormal test result. They may also be ordered to monitor a known thyroid condition or its treatment.

Preparation

Most thyroid tests need no special preparation and can be done at any time of day. If other blood tests are being drawn at the same time, you may be asked to fast; follow the instructions you are given.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as numbers for each marker, often with a reference range from the lab. A clinician interprets your results together with your symptoms, history, and any other tests. This is general information only and is not medical advice; talk with a qualified clinician about what your results mean for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for a thyroid test?

Usually no. Thyroid tests generally do not require fasting unless your clinician orders other tests that do.

How long do results take?

Most thyroid blood test results are ready in 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.

Can I take my thyroid medicine before the test?

Ask your clinician. Some people are told to take it as usual, while others are told to wait until after the blood draw.

Are thyroid tests painful?

They use a standard blood draw from a vein, which feels like a brief pinch. Serious problems are uncommon.
