Red Top Bentgrass Allergy Test in Alaska

The Red Top Bentgrass Allergy Test is a blood test that checks for an allergic sensitization to red top bentgrass, a common grass pollen found in lawns and fields. It is usually ordered when a person has seasonal allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, or itchy eyes and the cause is unclear.

What it measures

Red top bentgrass specific IgE — The main marker; it measures allergy-related antibodies directed at red top bentgrass pollen.
Total IgE — Sometimes included to show the overall level of allergy-related antibodies in the blood.
Other grass pollen IgEs — May be tested together to see whether symptoms are linked to several grasses rather than just red top bentgrass.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by a primary care clinician or an allergist when a patient reports seasonal allergy symptoms and a grass pollen trigger is suspected. It may also be used to help guide avoidance planning or further allergy evaluation.

Preparation

No fasting is required for this blood test. Tell the clinician about any antihistamines or other medications you take, because some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high, along with the laboratory's reference range. A clinician interprets the result together with your symptoms and history; a positive result alone does not confirm an allergy. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test hurt?

It uses a standard blood draw, so you may feel a brief pinch when the needle goes in. Most people return to normal activities right away.

How long do results take?

Results are usually available in 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by laboratory.

Can I take my allergy medicine before the test?

Ask your clinician. Some antihistamines can affect allergy testing, so they may recommend stopping certain medicines first.

What does a positive result mean?

It means your blood shows antibodies to red top bentgrass, which suggests sensitization. Your clinician will decide whether that explains your symptoms.
