A poppy seed allergy test checks your blood for antibodies that may indicate an allergy to poppy seeds. It is usually ordered when someone has had allergic symptoms after eating foods containing poppy seeds, such as baked goods or salad dressings.

What it measures

  • Poppy seed-specific IgE — Antibodies your immune system makes against poppy seed proteins.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels in your blood.
  • Related seed-specific IgE — Checks for reactions to similar seeds, such as sesame or sunflower.
  • Serum tryptase — A marker sometimes checked after a severe allergic reaction.

Who it is for

A doctor or allergist typically orders this test after a history of symptoms like hives, swelling, or breathing trouble following poppy seed exposure. It may also be used to help clarify a suspected food allergy.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed for this blood test. You can eat and drink normally unless your clinician gives other instructions.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of specific IgE, often grouped as negative, low, moderate, or high. A clinician interprets these numbers alongside your symptoms and history, because a positive result alone does not always mean a true allergy. This is general information, not medical advice; discuss your results with a qualified healthcare professional.
