The Hazel Nut Tree Allergy Test is a blood test that looks for an immune response to hazelnut (also called filbert) proteins. It is usually ordered when someone has had symptoms after eating hazelnuts or tree nuts, or when a clinician wants to check sensitivity before or during allergy evaluation.

What it measures

  • Hazelnut-specific IgE — An antibody linked to allergic reactions to hazelnut proteins.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels, sometimes included for context.
  • Tree nut panel components — May include related nut proteins to see whether reactions are specific to hazelnut.
  • Cross-reactive markers — Proteins that can overlap with birch pollen or other plant foods and cause similar symptoms.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician, allergist, or pediatrician typically orders this test. It may be requested after a suspected reaction or as part of a broader allergy workup.

Preparation

No fasting is required for this blood test. Tell the clinician about any antihistamines or other medicines you take, because some can affect allergy test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as antibody levels, often with a reference range or class score. A higher level suggests sensitivity but does not by itself confirm an allergy or predict how severe a reaction will be. Only a clinician can interpret the results with your history and symptoms. This is general information, not medical advice.

Requesting the Hazel Nut Tree Allergy Test in Alaska

Order online, choose a certified collection site in Alaska, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. Access across Pacific is uneven, so confirming a site ahead of time is worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to stop eating hazelnuts before the test?

Follow your clinician's instructions. In most cases, you do not need to change your diet before a blood test, but do not eat a food you are allergic to just for testing.

Can this test tell me how severe my allergy is?

No. It shows whether antibodies are present, but severity depends on your symptoms and history.

How long until I get results?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days, though it can vary by lab.

Is this test safe?

Yes. It uses a small blood sample and does not expose you to hazelnut.
