An egg yolk allergy test is a blood test that looks for antibodies your immune system may make against proteins found in egg yolk. It is usually ordered when someone has had allergic symptoms after eating eggs or egg-containing foods, or when a clinician wants to check whether egg is a trigger.

What it measures

  • Egg yolk-specific IgE — An antibody tied to allergic reactions to egg yolk proteins.
  • Egg white-specific IgE — Often checked alongside yolk to compare reactions to different egg parts.
  • Total IgE — A general allergy-related antibody level that can help give context.
  • Other food-specific IgE — Sometimes measured together to look for other possible food triggers.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician, allergist, or pediatrician typically orders this test. It is most common in children and adults who have had symptoms such as hives, stomach upset, or breathing changes after eating eggs.

Preparation

No fasting is needed. Tell the clinician about any allergy medicines you take, since some can affect allergy testing.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of egg yolk-specific IgE, often with a reference range from the lab. A higher level may suggest sensitivity, but it does not by itself diagnose an allergy; a clinician interprets it with your symptoms and history. This is general information, not medical advice.

Requesting the Egg Yolk Allergy Test in Alaska

Order online, choose a certified collection site in Alaska, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. With coastal metros, inland towns, and rural counties with very different access to testing, it pays to schedule your collection in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to eggs?

Not always. A positive result shows your immune system has made antibodies to egg yolk, but only a clinician can decide whether that means a true allergy based on your symptoms.

Can this test tell me if I can eat baked eggs?

No. It does not show how you will react to cooked or baked egg. Ask your clinician before trying any egg-containing food.

Do I need to stop eating eggs before the test?

Usually no. The test measures antibodies already in your blood, so avoiding eggs beforehand is not typically required unless your clinician says otherwise.

How long do results take?

Most results are ready in 1 to 3 business days, though timing can vary by lab.
