The dog dander allergy test is a blood test that checks whether your immune system reacts to proteins found in dog skin flakes, saliva, and urine. It is usually ordered when someone has ongoing allergy symptoms and a clinician wants to confirm or rule out dog dander as a trigger.

What it measures

  • Dog dander-specific IgE — Antibodies your immune system makes in response to dog allergens.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergy-related antibodies in your blood.
  • Dog serum albumin — A specific dog protein that can sometimes cause reactions.
  • Cross-reactive allergens — Markers that may show sensitivity shared with other animals.

Who it is for

A primary care clinician or allergist typically orders this test for people with persistent sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, or asthma symptoms around dogs. It may also be used before considering allergy shots.

Preparation

No fasting is required. Tell your clinician about any antihistamines or other medications you take, because some can affect allergy test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a numeric level or a class for each marker, often alongside a reference range. A clinician interprets these results together with your symptoms and history. This is general information only and is not medical advice.

Requesting the Dog Dander Allergy Test in Alaska

Order online, choose a certified collection site in Alaska, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. With coastal metros, inland towns, and rural counties with very different access to testing, it pays to schedule your collection in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to dogs?

Not necessarily. A positive result shows sensitivity, but only a clinician can determine whether it explains your symptoms.

Can I keep my dog if the test is positive?

Many people manage symptoms with guidance from a clinician. Discuss options with your healthcare provider.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are typically available within 1 to 3 business days after the blood draw.

Do I need to avoid dogs before the test?

No. The test measures antibodies in your blood, so avoiding dogs beforehand is not required.
