The corn smut (Ustilago) allergy test is a blood test that checks for allergic sensitization to corn smut, a fungus that grows on corn. It is usually ordered when a person has allergy symptoms that may be linked to corn or corn-based products, or when other tests have not found a clear cause.

What it measures

  • Ustilago-specific IgE — Antibodies that can trigger allergic reactions to corn smut.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic tendency, sometimes included for context.
  • Other mold-specific IgE — May be checked to see if symptoms are due to other molds.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by an allergist or primary care clinician for people with unexplained allergy symptoms, especially those who handle or eat corn products.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed. The blood sample can be taken at any time of day.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a level of specific IgE, often as a number or class. A clinician interprets the result along with your symptoms and history; a positive test alone does not mean you have an allergy. This is general information only and not medical advice.

Requesting the Corn Smut (Ustilago) Allergy Test in Alaska
