Below is a plain-language overview of the coffee allergy test. The Coffee Allergy Test is a blood test that looks for antibodies your immune system may make against proteins found in coffee beans. It is usually ordered when someone has symptoms such as hives, itching, swelling, or digestive upset after drinking coffee or eating coffee-containing foods, and the cause is unclear. Across Alaska, part of Pacific, the coffee allergy test can be ordered directly and collected at a certified site — no referral required.

What it measures

  • Coffee-specific IgE — An antibody tied to true allergy; a high level suggests your immune system reacts to coffee.
  • Total IgE — A general measure of allergic antibody levels in your blood.
  • Coffee-specific IgG — Another antibody type; its role in allergy is not well established and it is often used in food-sensitivity panels.
  • Cross-reactive markers — Checks for reactions to similar proteins, such as those in other seeds or nuts.

Who it is for

This test is typically ordered by an allergist, immunologist, or primary care clinician after you report symptoms linked to coffee. It may also be included in a broader food allergy panel.

Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is usually required. Tell your clinician about all medicines, especially antihistamines, because they can affect allergy test results.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as antibody levels, often with a reference range or class score. A clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms and history, since a positive result alone does not always mean you have a coffee allergy. This is general information and not medical advice.

Requesting the Coffee Allergy Test in Alaska

Order online, choose a certified collection site in Alaska, and review results through a secure portal. No referral is required, and orders are processed confidentially. With coastal metros, inland towns, and rural counties with very different access to testing, it pays to schedule your collection in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to stop drinking coffee before the test?

Usually no. Ask your clinician if you should avoid coffee beforehand, since recent exposure can affect some results.

Can this test tell me for sure if I am allergic to coffee?

It supports a diagnosis but is not definitive. Your clinician combines results with your symptoms and may recommend other testing.

How long does it take to get results?

Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 business days after the blood sample is collected.

Is a positive result always a coffee allergy?

No. Some people have positive antibody levels without symptoms, so a clinician must interpret the result in context.
