A chromium blood test measures the amount of chromium in your blood. Chromium is a metal that occurs naturally and is also used in industry. The test is ordered to check for exposure to chromium, especially in workplace settings, or to monitor people with metal implants.

What it measures

  • Total chromium — Measures all forms of chromium in the blood, including both essential and toxic types.
  • Hexavalent chromium — A toxic form that can cause health problems if inhaled or ingested; often tested in occupational exposure.
  • Trivalent chromium — A less toxic form that is sometimes used as a nutritional supplement.
  • Chromium level — The overall concentration in your blood, reported in micrograms per liter (mcg/L).

Who it is for

Doctors order this test for people who work in industries like welding, chrome plating, or leather tanning, or for those who have symptoms of chromium toxicity. It may also be used to check chromium levels in patients with metal hip or knee implants.

Preparation

No special preparation is usually needed. You may be asked to avoid chromium-containing supplements for a few days before the test. Tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you take.

Results and what they mean

Results are reported as a number that your doctor compares to a reference range. A high level may indicate recent or ongoing exposure, but only a clinician can interpret what it means for you. This information is not medical advice; discuss your results with your healthcare provider.
